Water is self.”

When I visited Korea in 2000, I had a little funny experience of Konglish firsthand. “Konglish” means a mixture of Korean and English that Korean people use albeit wrongly to communicate. If English was properly used, it might be ok. However, more often than not, it is just bad English.

I went to a restaurant and I was eating something. I asked an 아저씨(ajussi) for a glass of water. (Actually they use a metal cup.) The waiter points to the water cooler nearby and says “물은 셀프입니다.“ meaning “Water is self.” I looked over and indeed on the water cooler there was a sign that said “물은 셀프입니다.“ I was confused. I was in a restaurant, I ordered a meal, and the water cooler is like 3 feet away from this man. Only 5 minutes before, he had brought me my meal. Why is he not getting me some water? What is this stuff with “물은 셀프입니다.“ “Water is self.” I’m thinking to myself, “Water is self. Does that mean Water is itself?” “What would be the purpose of saying that?” After a few seconds later I realized that he meant “Water is self service.” I had no choice but to get some water for myself while murmuring under my breath, “Well, at least I don’t have to tip in this Country.” When I later thought about this incident, I cracked up so hard. Incidentally I found out that most common Korean restaurants have this “water is self service” policy.
“ “Water is self” “그러면 water is itself 라는거야?

In the U.S., the waiter gets the water for you. This is true even for a Korean restaurant in the U.S. Even in a food court, if you request water, they pour the water in a cup and give it to you. None of Korean restaurants that I’ve seen in the U.S. have silly signs that say whether or not water is “self” or “full” service.
